What are Google Map Citations and why are they important for your business?

Simply put, a Google Map Citation is just a mention of your business name, usually with address & phone number, on another website.

These mentions are typically in the form of a business listing on a directory e.g

  • Yell
  • Yelp
  • Thomson Local
  • Scoot
  • Foursquare
  • UK Small Business Directory
    …too name just a few

Done properly, these citations can help you improve your search engine rankings, including your Google My Business local presence.  They can increase your chances of your business showing in Maps when someone does a local search.

Start by visiting and creating listings with the established directories (Yell, Thomson) and build from there.

Ensure your details are CONSISTENT across all websites, in html / text format (not graphics, as these cannot be read easily by search engines).

As a minimum include:

  • Business / Company Name
  • Local phone number
  • Physical address

How many citations do you have?

If the answer is zero, or just a couple, then set yourself a goal to increase this asap.
